Citizenship of Belgium

The Kingdom of Belgium (Koninkrijk België) is one of the most flexible states in Europe for immigration, as the flexibility and democracy of the Belgian legislation allow foreigners to obtain Citizenship after three years of legal residence in the country.

Options for obtaining Belgian citizenship:

Naturalization. The term for obtaining citizenship in Belgium through naturalization is the shortest among the EU countries and is three years. For certain categories of persons - refugees, stateless persons and spouses of Belgian citizens, the legislative level provides for a reduction in this period.

Business in Belgium.
This type of Belgian citizenship implies residence in the state for at least 7 years. A prerequisite for the applicant is the creation of an enterprise in the form of a concern, the presence of a minimum start-up capital of 12,500 euros and an annual income of 35,000 euros.

Marriage to a Belgian citizen
Obtaining Belgian citizenship through marriage implies cohabitation with a Belgian partner from six months in Belgium and up to three years of residence abroad. Marriage outside of Belgium can be equated to living together in Belgium if the foreigner proves that there is a true relationship between spouses/partners and Belgium, namely frequent travel, company registration, property ownership and other evidence.

Applying for Belgian citizenship.
Residence in the state is required for at least 7 years, not mandatory conditions for the applicant are the creation of an enterprise in the form of a concern, the presence of a minimum start-up capital of 12,500 euros and an annual income of 35,000 euros.

Belgian citizenship requirements:

  1. Adult age of 18 years;
  2. Availability of sufficient financial resources for self-sufficiency;
  3. Knowledge of one of the three national languages - Dutch, French or German;
  4. High social integration into Belgian society through attendance at an officially recognized integration program or through five years of continuous work;
  5. Official residence in Belgium for at least two years;
  6. No criminal records or debts.

Deadlines for registration: 36 months


Cost of support for obtaining Belgian citizenship:

  • 140,000 euros per applicant;
  • 280,000 euros for spouse and applicant;
  • 350,000 euros for the applicant’s spouse and one child;
  • 420,000 euros for the applicant’s spouse and two children;
  • 80,000 for each additional family member.
