Residence permit in Italy

Italy is a country that consistently ranks among the top five European countries in terms of economic development.
Upon receipt of a residence permit in Italy "Permesso di soggiorno", this status confirms the right of a foreigner to legally reside in the country for a period of nine months to five years, depending on the chosen basis for obtaining it. Residence permit in Italy provides an opportunity for candidates to freely cross the borders of all EU countries without issuing visas.

Requirements for obtaining a residence permit:

- availability of an entry visa;
- submitting an application for a residence permit in Italy within eight working days from the date of entry into the country;
- the candidate must have sufficient funds for the duration of the permitted stay and the costs of returning to the country of citizenship or transit to a third state.

Options for obtaining a residence permit:

  1. hired work;

There are two types of residence permit in Italy:

1/ Temporary residence permit is issued to candidates who come to the country for a period of more than ninety days and plan to reside in the country from nine months to five years;

2/ A permanent residence permit is issued to candidates who have lived in Italy for at least five years and have good reasons to extend their stay.

In connection with the grounds for registration, there is a residence permit in Italy:

Working residence permit, issued to candidates who come to Italy to officially get a job in a local company, for seasonal work, or to open their own company, or to invest in the economy of the state or carry out religious activities;

Educational residence permit, issued to candidates who want to enter a university or take advanced training courses;

A residence permit for family reunification is issued to candidates who want to bring their closest relatives, as well as spouses, parents and children to the country;

Medical residence permit, issued to candidates who stay in the country for treatment in local public or private medical institutions and clinics;

Humanitarian residence permit, issued to candidates who stay in the country to receive international protection, as well as in cases of political asylum;

A residence permit at the chosen place of residence is issued to candidates who want to live permanently in Italy and have sufficient funds or passive income for a permanent stay in Italy without working in the country.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Doing business":

  • run your own business or engage in trade;
  • to practice professional activity;
  • running your own company or partnership in Italy;
  • hold a senior position in one of the local companies;
  • confirm the availability of funds for doing business;
  • certificate of inclusion in the professional or trade registers of the country;
  • certificate of the absence of obstacles to the issuance of a license or permit to conduct activities;
  • confirmation of the availability of housing in Italy;
  • certificate of income in excess of the minimum threshold for exemption from payment of medical services or a guarantee from an organization or an Italian citizen or resident legally residing in the country.

The validity period of the residence permit is two years.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Employment":

  • application for employment;
  • a copy of the employment contract;
  • an application from the employer to pay the return trip to the foreigner in case of deportation.

A residence permit for persons with permanent employment is issued for two years.
A residence permit for persons for seasonal work is issued for up to nine months.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Reunification with the family":

  • employment;
  • religious activities;
  • studies;
  • family ties;
  • refugee;
  • a certificate of the candidate's marital status and a certificate of marriage or divorce;
  • confirmation of the availability of housing in Italy, where relatives can live, as well as a certificate of the suitability of housing for living;
  • certificate of minimum annual income;
  • tax code of the candidate;
  • copies of passports of candidates who plan to immigrate to Italy for the purpose of reunification;
  • certificate of marital status of the reuniting relative;
  • valid residence permit.

The residence permit for family reunification is valid for two years.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Treatment":

  • a bank statement that certifies the candidate's ability to cover all costs of treatment;
  • a letter from a public or private hospital in Italy on the applicant's state of health with confirmation of the need for treatment and the expected length of stay in a medical institution in the country;
  • certificate of income confirming the possibility candidate to cover the costs of the stay in Italy.

The validity of the residence permit is equal to the duration of the candidate's treatment.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Study":

  • A candidate who wishes to obtain an educational degree at an Italian university has the right to request a residence permit for the entire period of study. The supporting document that must be provided to the candidate is a certificate of enrollment in a course of study or vocational training, as well as a bank statement that proves sufficient funds for the candidate to be self-supporting.

The residence permit is valid for one year.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Religious activity":

  • declaration of the head of the Italian religious community on the position of the applicant and the assumption of expenses for accommodation and meals of the candidate;
  • a copy of the candidate's insurance policy for the entire period of residence;
  • a contract with a religious organization.

Applicants receive a residence permit in connection with religious activities for the duration of their employment contract.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Obtaining international protection":

  • Candidates who entered the country as refugees, including for political asylum, are entitled to receive a residence permit. The applicant's dossier must be supplemented with a copy of the decision granting international protection.

The residence permit is valid for five years.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Investments":

    Those wishing to invest in the Italian economy can obtain an Investor visa, and then a residence permit. Applicants will be able to invest in any of the following properties:

  • invest in government bonds from 2,000,000 euros;
  • the minimum authorized capital of an operating Italian company must be 500,000 EUR;
  • invest in startups from 250,000 euros;
  • invest 1,000,000 euros in charitable foundations.

The residence permit for investment is valid for two years.

Requirements and documents for the foundation - "Choose place of residence":

  • One of the main conditions for obtaining this type of residence permit is the absence of the need to carry out paid activities in Italian territory. A residence permit can be obtained by all family members of the candidate's spouse, minor children and financially dependent relatives.

The residence permit is valid for up to 12 months with the possibility of annual renewal up to five years.

  • registration of a category D visa for the candidate;
  • no criminal record of the candidate;
  • terms of obtaining a residence permit 2/3 months.

  • 80,000 euros for spouse and applicant;
